For more than 50 years, the BVIU has worked in partnership with the public schools in Beaver County to provide a continuum of special education services for students with disabilities. Whether students attend one of the 14 school districts or the four charter schools in the county, services are offered in the least restrictive environments.
For students whose educational needs require center-based services, BVIU offers the New Horizon School, located in Brighton Township. The school adheres to PA Common Core Standards and employs highly qualified staff who are dedicated to providing a safe, secure and challenging environment for students with exceptional needs. The center-based program facilitates the development of critical skills as well as academic, social and vocational skills that support a successful transition from school to adult life. BVIU provides numerous programs and services including:
- ACCESS – The School-Based ACCESS program allows school districts to earn partial reimbursement for health-related services provided to students who are eligible for medical assistance. The BVIU’s business staff helps school districts complete the reimbursement process by ensuring compliance and the proper submission of claim documentation.
- Child Accounting – Maintaining accurate child accounting records can be challenging. Our child accounting expert will assist your child accounting staff with clerical support.
- Local Task Force – The Local Task Force is comprised of parents/guardians and system partners as mandated by the PARC Consent Agreement (1972). The partners work together to facilitate free and appropriate education for children of all abilities.
- Psychological Services – Pennsylvania-certified school psychologists provide psychological assessments and evaluations related to ability, achievement and emotional status for students 3–21 years of age. Psychologists also provide functional behavioral assessments, counseling services and crisis intervention.
- Special Education Contact Meetings – Monthly special education contact meetings are designed to keep BVIU member districts and charter schools up to date with special education laws, regulations, compliance monitoring and training. A representative from the Bureau of Special Education attends each meeting.
- Training and Consultation – BVIU offers many opportunities for professional development on topics related to special education.
