Special Education at the BVIU

For over forty years, the Beaver Valley Intermediate Unit has built a strong reputation for providing premiere programs and services for students with disabilities.  The BVIU works in partnership with the fourteen school districts and three charter schools in Beaver County to provide a continuum of special education supports and services for students with disabilities.  We strive to offer these services in the Least Restrictive Environment.

The BVIU is also the designated provider of specialized services for all eligible children with disabilities between the ages of three and five.  Together with the early childhood providers in the county, our Early Intervention Services program is dedicated to the provision of developmentally appropriate services and practices to enable young children to enjoy optimal cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth and development.

The Special Education Department can provide programs and services for students that require Autistic Support, Emotional Support, Learning Support, Life Skills Support, Multiple Disabilities Support, and Physical Support.  For students whose educational needs require center-based services, the BVIU offers New Horizon School.  Students from all fourteen school districts and surrounding communities attend New Horizon School, located in Brighton Township.  The school adheres to the PA Common Core Standards and all teachers and paraprofessionals are highly qualified.  The staff is dedicated to providing a safe, secure, yet challenging environment that facilitates the development of critical skills and the academic, social, and vocational development that support the successful transition from school to adult life.

Training and Consultation (TaC) services are also offered to all school entities in Beaver County in partnership with The Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education.

Gifted Education:
Gifted Education suport is through a county-wide consortium of area teachers.  Also, "Gifted Boot Camp" can be provided  to give educators of the gifted an overview of the requirements of Chapter 16, a background in gifted services and an explanation of the revisions to the required forms used for documenting gifted services.
